Creative with wood: how to paint a pallet?

We don't have to tell you: pallet wood is the trend of the summer! Do-it-yourselfers go to work with old used pallets to make lounge sets and coat racks. And the results are often stunning! Would you like to go a step further and paint your pallet furniture? You can! In this article, we will get you started with a step-by-step plan and the necessary tips.

Step-by-step plan

  1. Used wooden pallets are often very dirty. Therefore, first clean the wood quickly and safely with, for example, Xyladecor Power Cleaner for all Exterior Wood. The cleaner is suitable for all different types of pallets.
  2. After you have cleaned your pallets, we recommend sanding them down well. That way there are no more splinters in the wood and the corners are a little easier to paint. Use a scouring pad if the pallet wood is very dirty or graying. You can sand the pallets manually with coarse sandpaper or with a grinding machine. Sand the wood until all splinters and bumps are gone. Then make sure to dust the furniture thoroughly.
  3. Painting wooden pallets is not a good idea, as the paint will peel off quickly. We therefore recommend using an opaque stain for your pallet wood. This is because an opaque stain is a flexible paint that protects wood from UV rays and moisture. Moreover, the wood grains are also no longer visible after treatment with opaque stain. Xyladecor Garden House Color is an example of such a stain. You could also use Xyladecor opaque stain - TQ for this purpose. We can make the stain to color, but it is slightly thicker and less easy to apply. In any case, it is best to apply the covering stain with a brush
  4. Let the stain dry for at least 24 hours. It is best to re-stain the wood every four to five years.

Tips & tricks

  • Apply the stain when the pallet wood is completely dry. This is because moisture prevents paint from adhering to the surface.
  • The type of pallet you choose does not matter.
  • Do not paint your pallet wood in flat sunlight. Heat will prevent the stain from adhering well to the surface and may cause the paint to peel off. An ideal temperature for painting is between 15 and 20 degrees. Between painting and the time the paint takes to dry, it should not be too sunny and it should not rain.
  • It is recommended to paint the entire furniture in pallet wood. Furthermore, it is important not to paint only the top or visible side. This is because water could still seep in along the unpainted sides.
  • It is more convenient to paint your pallet wood before you assemble your furniture. That way you will still have access to all sides and edges of the wood.
